CONSERVATION AND STUDY OF GENETIC RESOURCES OF VARIABILITY IN MAIZE

The objectives are to:

  • Study the morphological, biochemical and molecular characteristics of maize genetic resources of local and introduced descent

  • Classify local material based on numerical analysis methods and the application of molecular genetic markers.

  • Eliminate duplicates in the collection.

  • Test combining ability of early maturing local populations to be used in pre-breeding.

  • Develop and manage the European maize data base (EMDB).

DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF MAIZE POPULATIONS AND COMPOSITES OF A BROAD GENETIC BASE

One of the goals of pre-breeding work is to identify desirable genotypes from the available maize germplasm variability and make recombinations to develop synthetic and composite populations. These populations should contain a larger frequency of desirable genes in comparison with non-selected material, and at the same time retain sufficient variability to enable further breeding progress.

  GENE BANK ACTIVITIES

Conservation, regeneration, testing and exchange of material

The objective of this subproject is to conserve accessions of economically important plants cultivated in Serbia. One of the basic tasks of gene bank work is to conserve the identity and vitality of accessions. For this task, new conservation technologies are applied. The Gene Bank Information and Documentation System facilitates management activities, including monitoring of the state of stored accessions. On demand accessions, are exchanged both with local and foreign institutions.
